About Dental Exam & Professional Cleanings

At your first visit our goal is do a comprehensive risk based assessment of your oral health. Looking at 4 major categories: Gums and Bone, Teeth, Function and your Esthetics we will tailor our treatment plan to your specific needs.

In performing this check up we will use X-rays that will allow us to detect cavities, cysts, tumours and assess periodontal bone levels. We will take high quality digital photos so we can show you what’s happening in your mouth and it also provides us with a historical record.

As part of an oral cancer screening we will check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer. We may elect to further investigate any potential issues through the use of an oral cancer screening device or a biopsy.

Our highly qualified dental hygienists will perform professional dental cleanings. They work in concert with the doctor helping to assess the health of the oral cavity

What is plaque?

Plaque is essentially a sticky mix of proteins and bacteria. These bacteria will secrete mucopolysaccahrides and then live in this film on the teeth called a biofilm.

At first it’s easy to remove this biofilm, think of like a thin coat of syrup on your teeth. If your not proactive in removing this plaque it can quickly petrify and harden into something called calculus. Once it as progressed to this point only a professional cleaning will be able to remove this build up.

If you do not remove these bacteria then the toxins and acids that build up can cause a host of inflammatory responses leading to periodontal disease. The bacteria within the calculus can also cause cavities.
